What Clients Say

“My pup runs to the door when we say ‘Oasis’! Spotless and so loving.” - Samantha R., Rancho Bernardo
“Best boarding experience ever. I travel knowing my dog is happy and safe.” - Daniel K.
"Thank you so much for sticking with us in our time of need through the holidays. We were almost out of options for pet care and you really came through. Dani seemed very happy and healthy when we finally got home. Also, not sure if Joe cleaned up any accidents or if there weren't any, but the house looked great too. We will definitely be referring Rancho Bernardo Pet Oasis and using your pet services in the future." - Jason N.
"The Pet Oasis is THE place to bring your dog! Steve is great and treats your dog like his own. We were gone for a week and half over christmas and new years and our dog Penny loved it! We received pictures and/videos of her everyday as well as updates. She went on plenty of walks and had multiple trips to the dog park (i think just about every day unless it was pouring outside). And best of all, His dog Shadow is very well behaved and is kind of the pack leader which gave young Penny a great example to follow. We will absolutely be back!" - Sean and Mandy

Steve's Story

Random Pic 4_edited.jpg

I have had pets my whole life. Growing up, I had dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs, a bunny, and even a mouse!

I definitely love dogs the most!

I have owned Labs my whole adult life. Labs are such great dogs — smart, loyal, friendly, and playful, just to name a few.

I got my first Lab, Boomer, from Lab Rescuers in 2012. He was 2 years old and the first mellow Lab I had ever had! I thought all Labs were hyper — not Boomer. Even at 2, people thought he was 8 or 9 years old! Boomer went everywhere with me. He was an awesome companion, and everyone loved him.

When Boomer was 10, in 2020, I decided to get him a companion. We got Shadow from Lab Rescuers. He was 2 also! He was totally playful and kept Boomer young. Unfortunately, Boomer got old — they all do. He passed in 2023.

Shadow was lonely, but I wasn’t ready for another dog. So I decided to foster for Lab Rescuers. Over 2 years, I fostered more than 15 dogs! Wow, what an incredible experience. Every single one of these dogs had issues. Many had been abused. One I got, Misty, had lived her whole life in a kennel — bred over and over again. She was used to only going on the pavement. Many wouldn’t even let me get near them. Very sad. But I noticed that after a short period, they warmed up to me. Their true personalities came out.

It was interesting — I noticed Shadow was helping them feel safe and secure. Shadow is not aggressive at all. He senses a dog’s nature. If a dog looks aggressive, Shadow will keep his distance. If the dog becomes aggressive, he tries to ignore them and not give them energy. I actually started using this with my interactions with people! LOL. Usually, within a few days, Shadow and the dog would be lying next to each other.

I decided to start Pet Sitting and Boarding for the same reason I started fostering — I want to help pets. I love making pets feel safe and happy. I had friends who were leaving their dogs in boarding facilities for days, and they would tell me how their dogs were depressed for a few days when they got back. That sucks! I don’t want any dog to experience that. I would love for all dogs to feel no different when their parent is out of town. That is why I started Rancho Bernardo Pet Oasis.

I have many larger goals beyond Boarding and Pet Sitting. Over time, I will share that vision.

But rest assured — if your pet stays with me, they will have a great experience.

Shadow's Story

(And the Shadow Effect)

I have owned, trained, and taken care of over 25 dogs in my lifetime. I can honestly say he is the best dog I have ever had! Sorry, Digger.

I had a great black Lab named Boomer. My kids kept hassling me that Boomer needed a playmate. Finally, in 2020 (during COVID), I caved. I decided to contact Lab Rescuers and let them know I was ready for another black Lab (white ones shed too much!). I wanted a dog around two years old.

When I met Shadow, I loved his puppy energy! Boomer was much more mellow. So, we got him.

At first, Shadow was one of the worst dogs I had ever had! He chewed everything — shoes, socks, couches, reading glasses, sunglasses, remote controls, etc. I was paranoid about leaving anything on the coffee table. I think I went through 10 TV remotes! It was a nightmare. Then, with time, he mellowed out. Now, he’s by far the best.

He doesn’t chew, lick people, jump on people, drool, or run away. He follows me everywhere I go and is totally friendly with everyone — but that’s just how Labs are!

However, Shadow has a special talent — he’s literally a dog whisperer. He knows how to “handle” every type of dog. He’s almost 8 now, but he still plays like a puppy… then tires out! If a dog is aggressive with him, or if he senses that the dog is aggressive, he’ll avoid them. If a dog gives him negative energy, he won’t give it back. He mellows them out.

I have yet to have a meet-and-greet where someone thought their dog wouldn’t get along with Shadow. Quite the opposite! He has a way of changing the attitude of aggressive dogs. He’s a protector at the dog park — if two dogs start fighting, he tries to get between them and break it up. It’s amazing to watch. He’s a rock star at the local dog park! I’ve even had people request playdates with Shadow. One lady I help care for said Shadow is the only dog her dog gets along with. He avoids conflict. Even I’ve learned from him.

I’ve been fostering for a few years now for Lab Rescuers. The dogs we get are usually broken. They’ve been abused, neglected, overbred, or have severe separation anxiety. Shadow ends up “showing them the ropes.” Whether it’s how to go on a walk or learning that most people are friendly, Shadow has his way. I’ve found that a lot of dogs just follow him — they copy what he does. He’s a great role model for all dogs.

And while he’s mellow, he has no problem sticking up for himself. If a puppy gets too rambunctious with him, that puppy quickly learns that Shadow won’t put up with that!

If you have a dog that needs help socializing with other dogs — Shadow can help!
